A useful inventory can be simple

You do not need a perfect spreadsheet for every object in the house. A room-by-room video, clear photographs, and records for higher-value items can create a strong starting point after a loss.

Walk through one room at a time

Narrate the video as you walk. Mention brands, purchase dates, and notable features while they are easy to see.

  • Open closets, cabinets, drawers, garages, and storage areas.
  • Capture model and serial numbers for electronics and appliances.
  • Photograph receipts, appraisals, and ownership records for valuable items.
  • Include seasonal equipment and items stored away from the main living space.

Store a copy away from the home

A record that exists only on a device inside the property may be lost in the same event. Keep a secure cloud copy or another protected copy outside the home, and make sure a trusted household member knows how to access it.

Use the inventory for an insurance review

The process may reveal jewelry, collections, art, tools, or equipment that deserve a closer look. Ask whether the policy has category limits and whether scheduling specific items would provide broader protection.
